The adoration of both multiple purpose vehicles (MPVs) and Kia Motors keeps on towering. The Korean automaker on Wednesday said that it obtained 1,410 orders for its Carnival MPV on a primary day.

Clients remunerated the lofty booking whopper of Rs 1 lakh to line up the Carnival MPV, which could be launched at the Auto Expo to be held in Greater Noida in February, Kia said. The cost of the exceptional MPV is yet to be made public.

The corporation further revealed that 64 % of the pre-orders were for the luxurious Limousine variant of the MPV.

After losing steam within the past few years, the MPV segment has again been on the increase. Led by a series of latest launches, the segment registered a 35 percent growth in 2019 to 2.2 lakh units, with cars priced between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 25 lakh, ET had earlier reported. By comparison, major segments of the automotive sector suffered during the year, mostly in double digits.

The market share of MPVs in India has now increased from 5 percent to eight percent. At its peak, MPVs had accounted for 10 percent of the general market and experts feel that with upcoming launches from Maruti Suzuki and Toyota during this segment, also with the Kia Carnival, may assist the segment to reach its earlier highs.

On its part, Kia Motors has been popular since its inception within the Indian market. It's a maiden vehicle, the Seltos SUV, had recorder over 6,000 bookings on the primary day when it had been launched last year.
