MG Motor India received 2800 bookings in less than a month for its first electric vehicle for the Indian market ZS EV launched at Rs 20.88-23.58 lakh (ex-showroom, India).
Customers who booked ZS EV till Jan 17, 2020, will pay Rs 19.88 lakh for the Excite version and Rs 22.58 lakh for the Exclusive variant.
MG Motor India President Rajeev Chaba said, “We have set up charging stations for the vehicle in metros as well as satellite cities for peace of mind of our customers."
The vehicle comes with a 44.5 kWh battery and can deliver a range of around 340 km on a single charge. The company will begin with sales of the MG ZS EV in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad.
The vehicle will be manufactured locally at the company's facility in Halol, Gujarat. While key components will be imported initially, work is on to deepen localization levels. It plans to produce 100 units of the vehicle every month, which could be increased to 200-300 units depending on demand.
To address charging infrastructure, MG Motor India has partnered with Fortum, Delta Electronics India, and eChargeBays to set up charging points across customers' residences, dealerships, and some public places.
While the ZS EV is aimed at demonstrating the company's technological capability in the local market, MG Motor has also commenced work to introduce a more affordable electric vehicle priced around Rs 10 lakh here in the next few years.
Chaba said the corporation had already started performing on the project, taking cues from the wants of local consumers. The concept is going to be completed within the next year, and a production model may hit the roads within the next three to four years, he said.
MG Motor plans to launch a complete of 4 vehicles within the Indian market over two years. The MG ZS EV would be followed by two more SUVs — a midsize vehicle and a 7-seater version of the Hector — next fiscal year.
